Home / Blogs / AI Max Can Expand Your Google Ads Reach. It Can Also Expand Your Waste
PPC
Google AI Max gives Search campaigns more freedom to move beyond the keywords advertisers choose.
It can identify additional searches, generate new ad copy and select a landing page it believes is more relevant to the user.
That can help businesses capture demand their keyword lists missed.
It can also give Google more ways to spend their budget.
The difference depends on what AI Max is working with:
Google reports that non-retail advertisers activating AI Max typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS. That figure comes from Google’s aggregated internal data. It is not a guaranteed result for every campaign.
AI Max can expand performance.
But when the inputs are weak, it can expand waste just as efficiently.
Traditional Search campaigns begin with the advertiser deciding which keywords matter.
A digital marketing agency may target:
But customers do not always search using neat, predictable phrases.
Someone may search:
“agency that can reduce wasted ad spend and improve lead quality”
That query may be highly relevant even if it does not closely match an existing keyword.
AI Max allows Google to expand beyond the campaign’s keywords using broad-match and keywordless technologies. It considers existing keywords, ads, creative assets and website URLs when identifying additional searches that may be relevant.
AI Max is not a separate campaign type. It is a set of targeting and creative enhancements added to a Search campaign.
The keyword list still matters.
It is simply no longer the only thing defining your reach.
AI Max mainly expands three parts of a Search campaign.
Google can enter your ads into auctions for relevant searches beyond the keywords already inside the account.
This may uncover longer, more conversational and less predictable queries.
It may also expose the campaign to searches you would never have selected yourself.
Google can create additional headlines and descriptions using your domain, landing pages, existing ads and ad-group keywords.
These assets can appear alongside the copy supplied by the advertiser. Google also gives advertisers reporting to review the text it has generated.
Google can replace your selected landing page with another relevant page from the same domain when it believes that page better matches the search.
For example, a broad digital marketing campaign may normally direct visitors to a general service page. Someone searching specifically for generative engine optimisation may instead be sent to a dedicated GEO page.
Final URL expansion is turned on by default when an advertiser opts into AI Max, although it can be switched off. Advertisers can also exclude pages they do not want Google to use. Google says the selected page must be relevant to the query and connected to the ad group’s theme.
When Google chooses another URL, pinned responsive-search-ad assets may not be used because they may not match the new page or the user’s intent.
In one search, Google may therefore help decide:
That is a significant amount of control to hand over without first checking the quality of the system behind it.
Google says AI Max is helping open billions of previously unmonetised searches to advertising as queries become longer and more conversational.
That deserves attention.
It also needs context.
A search becomes monetisable for Google when an ad can be shown against it.
It becomes valuable to the advertiser only when it produces a meaningful business result.
Those are not the same thing.
More reach can produce:
It can also produce:
Incremental traffic is not automatically incremental growth.
The question is not whether AI Max can find more searches.
It can.
The question is whether those searches create enough commercial value to justify the additional spend.
Even a perfectly managed AI Max campaign has a limit.
It can find people who are searching.
It cannot guarantee that your business was considered before that search happened.
A buyer may already have formed a shortlist through:
Paid search can still influence the final choice. But it often enters after consideration has already begun.
That means there are two different problems to diagnose.
The first is an account problem. Poor targeting signals, unsuitable landing pages or weak conversion data are wasting budget.
The second is a preference problem. Your brand was not visible or credible when the buyer began deciding whom to consider.
Cleaning your AI Max setup can reduce avoidable waste.
It cannot place your brand on a shortlist that formed without you. That is why AI Max can increase your cost per lead even when total conversions rise.
A website has always influenced what happens after an ad click.
AI Max increases its influence before the click.
Google can use your website and landing-page content to understand:
Text customisation uses information from the domain, landing pages, existing ads and keywords. Final URL expansion can then choose another relevant page from the website.
This creates a problem for businesses with unclear websites.
If several service pages repeat the same generic promises, Google has to interpret that ambiguity.
It may:
Your website is no longer only where the click lands.
It is helping Google decide which clicks to buy.
This may be the biggest AI Max risk.
Google Ads does not automatically know which enquiry your sales team considers valuable.
It understands the conversion actions you give it.
Suppose an account treats all of these as primary conversions:
The campaign may report strong conversion growth.
But those actions could include:
If Google is told that all these actions represent success, it may optimise toward finding more people likely to complete them.
That does not mean the technology failed.
It means the campaign was trained using the wrong definition of success.
Google allows advertisers to send qualified-lead and converted-lead outcomes from a CRM or internal sales system back into Google Ads. These deeper events give the platform more information about which enquiries progressed after the initial interaction.
The better signal is not:
Someone completed a form.
It is:
Someone completed a form, matched our target profile and became a real sales opportunity.
Enhanced conversions for leads can also connect later offline outcomes back to the original ad interaction using first-party information collected from the website.
AI Max does not remove the need for campaign management.
It changes where that management happens.
Advertisers may spend less time trying to predict every possible search phrase.
They must spend more time controlling:
You give Google more room to find demand.
In return, you must give it clearer information and stronger limits.
Weak manual targeting may waste money slowly.
Weak automation can waste it at scale.
AI Max has a stronger chance of improving performance when:
The risk rises when:
AI Max cannot repair a weak measurement system.
It can only optimise using the signals it receives.
A test can show:
And still produce worse business results.
A meaningful AI Max test should examine:
Google’s AI Max reporting lets advertisers review search terms, customised text and selected landing pages. That information can then be used to tighten keywords, assets and URL controls.
AI Max can win inside the Google Ads dashboard while losing inside the sales pipeline.
Remove accidental clicks and low-value interactions from primary optimisation unless they genuinely represent business value.
Marketing and sales should agree on what makes an enquiry worth pursuing.
This may include:
Use qualified leads, converted leads and meaningful conversion values instead of relying only on form submissions.
Exclude pages that should not receive paid traffic, including:
Check negative keywords, brand settings, locations, eligible URLs, generated assets and bidding targets before the test begins.
Google provides a one-click AI Max experiment that splits an existing Search campaign 50/50 between the original setup and the AI Max test. This avoids creating a separate duplicate campaign.
Do not scale the trial because it produced more conversions.
Scale it when it produces better qualified leads, stronger sales opportunities or more revenue at an acceptable cost.
Verve Media starts by checking what Google is being told to optimise for.
We review the conversion setup, lead-quality definitions and downstream sales outcomes before judging campaign performance. A form fill, a qualified lead and a closed customer should not all carry the same meaning.
We then control the expansion. That means reviewing the searches AI Max enters, the copy it generates and the pages it selects, while tightening negative keywords, URL exclusions, location settings and landing-page relevance.
Finally, we test AI Max against the existing campaign and measure what reaches the sales pipeline. The decision is based on qualified-lead cost, opportunity value and revenue, not simply the number of conversions reported by Google.
The goal is not to prevent AI Max from exploring.
It is to ensure that its exploration has clear boundaries and a commercially useful definition of success.
More automation should produce better decisions, not simply faster spending.
AI Max may help businesses reach valuable searches that conventional keyword strategies miss.
But giving Google more freedom before fixing the website, landing pages and conversion signals does not remove waste.
It automates it.
Before activating AI Max, make sure Google can clearly understand:
AI Max should not be judged by how far it expands your campaign.
It should be judged by whether that expanded reach produces better customers and stronger business results.
Only then does expanded reach become expanded growth.
